POULTRY PRODUCTS / HISTORY

Rancid Poultry, Clothearz, AMA
experimental rock, electronics, etc. from Yorkshire

Rancid Poultry were originally a Yorkshire (UK) indie new-wave band formed in the early 1980s who first came to light via releases on Land Of Yrx Products. During the course of 10 years or so, along with other related projects, they went on from strength to strength, totally reinventing themselves as one of the foremost experimental rock outfits of the era. In parallel, two Rancid Poultry members also worked as the experimental electronic project Clothearz with a number of diverse and highly creative releases. Another splinter group was AMA, who were more of a power rock trio in freeform jamming mode. In the 1990s only Rancid Poultry kept on going with sporadic releases, and then a number of other split-offs, eventually mutating into the prpGroup.
††† In Audion magazine we did our best to promote them and tell the world how good they were. Andy G. (Lotus and CD Services) also tried to champion them and spread the word. It's a great shame though that more people didn't discover them. When cassette sales were starting to slow down, we were going to release an LP by them, but we lost touch, only re-establishing contact when prpGroup did a promotion drive. Then we lost touch again. So when re-establishing contact in 2016 one of my first questions was "can we have permission to do some reissues" to which the answer was yes!
††† This "Poultry Products" series is now more-or-less complete (unless they manage to locate some other lost recordings worthy of reissue) and includes all their finest releases, as well as some that have never been released before, mostly remastered and restored by Alan Freeman at Tachyon Studio.

Some reviews...

Rancid Poultry - DELICATE CREATURES (Own label) MC
An odd name for an odd band. These "decomposing chickens" are quite an inventive trio, playing a mixture of rhythmically aggressive and atmospheric electronic music that doesn't conform to the usual strict rules.
Their influences are often quite obvious - Heldon, Kingdom Come (JOURNEY) and early Hawkwind to name but three. Undoubtedly, my favourite cut is Beneath The Dead Sun, a long majestic work with a strangely contorted vocal sound, swathed with shimmering effects and drones that, after the introduction of a rhythm, builds up slowly like a restrained bolero - never climaxing - as to do so would ruin the feel of the whole piece. I must also make a point about the excellent Mellotron sections, one of my all-time favourite instruments - but, surprise surprise, I'm informed by one member that they haven't got a Mellotron, and they in fact sampled it from Jasun Martz's classic THE PILLORY, well - I suppose that's the next best thing.

Rancid Poultry - ROCK ĎNí ROLL WONíT NEVER DIE (Own label) MC
Clothearz - A LUV UíL ĎAV, LUVA VUL VAL UVULA? (Own label) MC
These guys definitely donít want to be taken seriously, especially with their titles and whacko psychedelic doodle covers!
††† ROCK ĎNí ROLL... declares that it will die, note the double negative! However, this cassette contains some excellent music, not really the step on from DELICATE CREATURES (reviewed in Audion #3 p.28) that I expected, and no Mellotron samples -what?! Preston Gubbals While Quatt Fitz is a truly magnificent piece of Heldon-esque rock, oppressive and fierce it rattles on relentlessly with mock Pinhas guitar to the fore. Aleatoresis finds them really cutting it with some excellent riffing in the style of early Hawkwind, brilliant guitar work, lots of bubbling synths and a great rhythm, as Steve says - Ďso unfashionable, but so bloody good!í Necrobortborygmus though, shows their darker side with brooding electronics, effects and other spooky sounds creating a really great atmosphere. Elsewhere, they explore other musical regions, some really interesting and some less so, in fact the only cut I actually donít like is Itchy Bed - it just riles me!
††† Clothearz are Poultry members Drake and Cloth taking a side each while third member Davis is away on holiday. Risotto Drakeís side is very inventive and experimental, lots of looped voices and guitar - much like Achim Reichel at his weirdest on the first cut, like Asmus Tietchens on others. Jarec Lhot is all echoed voice, a lot of it snatched from news broadcasts on TV. I think it would have been far better if the text had been invented - like with Erocís classic Horrorgoll. Makeral Clothís side however is a different story, messy electronics and radio noise. I suppose most experimentalists have done something like this, but most of us keep it hidden! Definitely for noise freaks only.

Rancid Poultry - Controlled Exposure
. 1989 Poultry Productions. Cassette only release.
Rancid Poultry came out of the 1980s festival scene, but arrived with some influences out of the industrial movement. Had they stuck around another year or two, most likely they would've been on a label like Mystic Stones or Demi Monde. Good raucous space rock - with some interesting screamed vocals. They had other cassettes, but this is the only one I purchased back then. Comes with a nice booklet as well.

Poultry Productions
No, our eccentric friends from Yorkshire haven't all emigrated, there's just been a hiatus during a period of reorganisation, and they're set to unleash a plethora of recordings. In fact, as it's the 10th Anniversary of Rancid Poultry, they're threatening to unleash a mass of archive recordings too!
††† There were plans to co-produce a Rancid Poultry album a couple of years back with Ultima Thule, but nothing came of this. We wanted something like their classic CONTROLLED EXPOSURE, but the aborted QAOTIC PESTILENCE was far from it. The as yet to be released MUSICIDE is much closer: kinda like Metabolist lost in the no-man's-land between Throbbing Gristle and Can. Just out is the curiously STREEL-ALONG-A-POULTRY, a cut-up of various improvisations, inter-cut with other text and sounds. Unnerving and jarring to say the least! There's also the "recorded in the sewer" sounding grunge rock of LIVE AT LEEDS (BUT STEVE DOESN'T). The mantric-psych-space-rock group AMA also make a return under the guise of AMA II. GENUFLEX is a really stoned monotonous throbbing work, that seems to exist more than actually do much. There's also a Clothearz live tape due, aptly called GIG, which is mostly industrial sounding electronics with a strong nod to Throbbing Gristle. A sideline project to Clothearz has been the "chill-out" ambient music they've created under the guise of You're Nasal Multiplex. Two tapes are due out soon

Rancid Poultry - The Termite Club, Leeds - 12 July 1997
Rancid Poultry: I was told, at the previous gig, that this was to be an anniversary of the Poultry clan and, aptly to celebrate, there was a free copy of their single to anyone attending the concert. I got there late, about a quarter of the way through the concert, and had trouble finding somewhere to sit. Meanwhile, Rancid Poultry were playing a sort of devilishly demented psychedelic avant-garde rock, along with a fitting unusual backdrop of films ("Planet of the Apes", dinosaur footage, lewd sex films and the like!). As the music was buzzing with brazen intensity, the first comparison that came to mind was Chrome meets Guru Guru, a trippier Skullflower, or maybe even a loose Metabolist cum Faust. All of this lead to a surreal depravity in the music, which became more frenzied and demented, accentuated by a vocalist who ranted more than sang. This carried on until "Cloughy" let-rip at the end - unexpectedly - a great way to end the first set. In the intermission, some friends of Rancid Poultry took to the stage doing a bit of improvisation (lasting around 15 minutes) with a droning violin, joined by guitar and drums, controlled but almost chaotic rhythms a bit like Neu!. For the second Rancid Poultry set, they played more of the same, only a bit more like Metabolist meets Faust, the music merging with the film footage for sensory bombardment. When Cloughy threw his bass down and started to play a Moog synth, then the set felt as if it were over. A great concert.
