releases... review... Seismic Telegraph - A SEA OF SPACE (Auricle
AMCDR 317) Recorded at a Quadelectronic
event, the members state 'Seismic Telegraph is not exactly a new band, as all
four members have been playing in various combinations at Quadelectronic
events for many years, honing a rapport that one could say has achieved an almost
telepathic empathy and way of working'. The accuracy of this statement is
almost eerie, as I would have thought these three long works to be thoroughly
composed pieces and not live improvisations. Admittedly, Chris "snazzied
up" the recordings later, but he had to have something to work with so
my statement rings true. This is pretty much a perfect blend of all the participants'
skills, with Alan and Steve and Jez focusing on synths (virtual ones in
Alan's case) and effects, while Chris is the Jamie Muir of the group (in
instrumental terms, not in playing style) on theremin, Irish whistle,
kalimba, shakers, coffee cup, voice, and effects. The pieces develop nicely, going from deep space ambience to
failing re-entry sounds to a bit of both with intriguing backwards loops (I
think: Help me here, Alan and Steve - Sounds played via the
"Virtual Sampler" on the laptop - Alan) to relaxing almost
Deuter-esque sounds... and that's just the opener Complete Radio Silence! The
other tracks follow similar lines but are full of their own surprises and
