review... Guitar albums seem to be making
a bit of a comeback at the moment. ... People like Keith Rowe or Robert Fripp
have always used the electric guitar for more than what it appears to be. Now
we've even got Steve Roach using it, or Fennesz with his laptop/guitar
interface and now Alan Freeman. Greatly encouraged by his work as part of improvisers Endgame,
where his guitar has often been used to great effect, he has recorded this
nine track album. ... It starts with gentle washes of sound before being
overtaken by icy blasts of cold guitar wind that swirl and rise and fall.
Other tracks take small ideas and sounds and play with them for just the
right length of time - there's nothing worse than someone stretching an idea
out beyond its time. The tracks here are structured rather than abstract
improvisation. The sounds used can be harsh and industrial (played with metal
objects?), or long ambient tones (violin bow perhaps?). It's a varied album, but one that sticks to distinct
