review... This should be so simple really,
Extremities should consist of equal parts Endgame and Triax in its sound, but
nothing, of course is that straight forward if it comes from Leicester.
Suffice to say then, that Extremities confuse, confound and amaze in equal
amounts. Their roots may lie somewhere in Wümme circa 1972 but their sound is
certainly Knighton Fields circa 2006 and beyond. Taken from a session in November 2006 and certainly benefiting
from the use of laptop and direct to digital recording the latest Extremities
release really SHOULD be a CD heard by anyone with open ears, but I suspect
that few will even be aware of its existence let alone feel brave enough to
give it a chance. I'm sure that Extremities themselves are aware of this
dilemma, and more power to them that they nevertheless choose to persist in
releasing these discs. Overall the sound is really quite jarring, instruments clash
and collide in an unexpected manner, it shouldn't work, but somehow it does.
Take for example the nine minute plus Sinfionetta, (Or perhaps we
should re-title it "Chance Meeting Between Tortured Hurdy-Gurdy And
Piano Loop") a really dense and claustrophobic piece, easy listening it
certainly ain't, but it remains, nevertheless, the most adventurous and
